Toward a Greater Understanding: Transgender Identity and the Jewish Community

“Toward a Greater Understanding: Transgender Identity and the Jewish Community” Hosted by New Voice, Co-sponsored by JCC in Manhattan, Gayava: Columbia/Barnard Hillel’s LGBTQ Jews and Allies group and Nehirim: GLBT Culture and Spirituality.

November 25, 7-9pm at the JCC in Manhattan (334 Amsterdam Ave @76th St)

Professor Joy Ladin, a transgender Professor at Yeshivah University, Melissa Simon, Cooperberg-Rittmaster Rabbinical Intern at Congregation Beth Simchat Torah, and Rafi Daugherty, a member of Nehirim shared their personal experiences of the intersection of transgender issues and Judiasm.

They spoke about family, synagogue, teaching, Jewish text and third genders, and the importance of being an ally. After the panel, a question and answer session was moderated by Nehirim and CBST member Jase Schwartz.

Participants filled the room, each with the opportunity to share their comments, questions and knowledge. Audience members ranged from college students to grandparents, synagogue members to non-Jewish partners and friends, transgender individuals and people just looking to learn something new.

Refreshments were served afterwards, allowing all to mingle and continue the conversation.
