Nehirim Final Transition Update
Nehirim Final Transition Update
December, 2015 Nehirim’s Final Transition Dear Nehirim Supporters – When Nehirim was founded twelve years ago by Rabbi Jay Michaelson the world looked totally different. Our programming helped launch a sea change resulting in flourishing LGBTQ Jewish social, cultural and communal offerings in most major cities. Orthodox communities are well served by Eshel, an organization with roots in Nehirim. During this time Nehirim’s extraordinary programming has touched thousands of lives. While there is still much holy work to be done, the Board and staff concluded after much research that the best way to secure the financial future of our successful programs was to export them to larger organizations with the bricks and mortar to host them. We are blessed to report that we’ve secured the future of the following programs with ideal hosts and the ensured continuity of Nehirim’s name and beloved leadership. Please connect with the new hosts to get additional information about those programs: • Easton Mountain will continue to host and run Men’s Camp. Rabbi David Dunn Bauer will continue to direct. The 2016 Camp will be August 3-7. http://eastonmountain.org/ • Pearlstone retreat center will host the Women’s Retreat, with Chani Getter continuing to direct. http://pearlstonecenter.org/ • CBST will host the NYC Urban Shabbaton. Rabbi David Dunn Bauer and a committee of Nehirim regulars will work with CBST’s visionary leadership to ensure ongoing success. https://cbst.org/ • Hillel will host our Student Retreats with programmatic continuity provided by our current Student Director, Rachel Stein. http://www.hillel.org/ • Our LGBTQ Jewish Clergy programming will continue through the Pacific School of Religion’s Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies. http://clgs.org/ • Ma’agal Women’s Circle will continue to meet at the JCC on a participant donation basis, led by Chani Getter. • Portland’s LGBTQ Jews will continue to meet with support from Rabbi Debra Kolodny. www.asthespiritmovesus.com I am so grateful to our participants, donors, Board, Deb and staff for the thoughtfulness and love for Nehirim that everyone has brought to this transition. Blessings, Corey Friedlander Board Chair
